BA in Advanced Avoidance
The University's flagship undergraduate degree in the disciplined, deliberate, and frequently elaborate art of not quite getting to it. Over three unhurried years, students develop a sophisticated repertoire of avoidance — strategic, principled, and never to be confused with mere idleness.
Course structure
The programme unfolds across three years, each building patiently upon the deferred foundations of the last. Core modules are compulsory; optional modules may be attempted at the student's leisure, or admired respectfully from a distance.
- Year 1 — Foundations of Avoidance; Introduction to the Productive Detour; The Art of the Cold Beverage.
- Year 2 — Intermediate Stalling; Inbox Architecture; Comparative Distraction (Theory & Practice).
- Year 3 — The Long Deferral; Dissertation Avoidance; Capstone: A Project Begun in Earnest, Eventually.
Study abroad or placement
Students may undertake an optional placement year, which can be commenced at any point during the degree — or held in reserve indefinitely. Popular destinations include the sofa, the kitchen at eleven in the evening, and several open tabs about moving abroad.
Learning and assessment
Assessment is continuous, in the sense that it is always approaching. Deadlines are issued as gentle suggestions and may be extended on request, on principle, or on a whim.
- 40% — Coursework, submitted when ready
- 30% — Sustained intention, assessed by interview
- 30% — A final piece of work, currently outlined
Professional accreditations
The programme is accredited by the Institute of Deferred Excellence and the Royal Society for the Postponement of Effort. Both accrediting bodies are presently reviewing their own paperwork and expect to confirm shortly.
Recognition of Professional Qualifications
This qualification is recognised throughout the sector wherever recognition is currently pending. Graduates report that the award is widely respected by colleagues who have, for some time now, been meaning to look into it properly.
Holders may use the post-nominal letters to which they feel, on balance, entitled.
Case study
“I set out to write a single essay,” recalls one second-year, “and in avoiding it I reorganised my entire library by colour, learned conversational Italian, and finally cleaned the oven. The essay remains untouched, but I have never felt more accomplished.”
